2014 show will be Sweeney Todd

Here is the news that everyone has been waiting for – our show for 2014 will be the wonderful musical ‘Sweeney Todd’.  Based on the book by Hugh Wheeler, and with the fabulous music and lyrics of Stephen Sondheim, this show will be a real treat for our audiences, and for our cast.  There is some interesting and challenging singing, along with a funny and entertaining script.  Our Producer/Director Andrea Hall, and our Musical Director Peter Wellsted are both excited about the months ahead, so why not come along and join our society?

We start rehearsals in September, ready to perform the show from 13 to 15 March 2014.  Watch this space for more information ……

Trevor goes the extra mile to take on Yul Brynner’s iconic role of The King of Siam

Trevor Fenton always gives 100% to his performance – but this year he has gone the extra mile, by having his head shaved to take on the role of King Mongkut of Siam in the King and I.   Trevor decided against wearing a bald cap, and allowed Mrs Anna (Katy Meadows) to shave his head for the role.   Katy soon overcame her initial nerves at using clippers for the first time, and was cheered on by the cast as she slowly but surely removed all of Trevor’s hair.

As this year’s show coincides with Comic Relief, we will be passing collection buckets around the auditorium, so if you want to sponsor Trevor’s head shave, please give generously.

New rehearsal venue

We are really pleased to announce that our rehearsal venue for ‘The King and I’ will be the Savoy Hotel on North Parade.  We will be in their function room, which is a lovely space with a dance floor, and ideal for our rehearsals.  There is a bar downstairs, where you will be able to buy cold or hot drinks.   Ample car parking is available on the Seafront as well, so you won’t have too far to walk.

We know we will be well looked after at the Savoy, so we look forward to seeing you all there.

Principal auditions will be held there on Monday 1 October, and our first chorus workshop will be on Monday 8 October.  Members old and new are very welcome, so please come along and bring some friends!

Would you like to be one of the King of Siam’s children?

Skegness Musical Theatre is performing  The King and I, on 14, 15, 16 March 2013 at The Embassy Theatre, Skegness.

We need lots of young people to act as the King of Siam’s children, as well as two teenage boys to take the roles of Louis and Prince Chulalongkorn.

Auditions will be held at Seathorne School on Sunday 30 September, starting at 2.30 pm, so why not come along and sing us a song of your choice?

Parents:  if you would like to know more, please come along to the auditions and meet the production team, or send us a message via the website or our facebook page.

Don’t forget – first rehearsal on Monday 10 September, 7.30 pm, at Grand Central

We’re looking forward to seeing lots of familiar faces, and lots of new faces too, at the first rehearsal for The King and I.  This will be a chance to get together with friends old and new, sing through the songs, and pick up audition pieces.  We’ll also give you all the information you need about show dates, rehearsal dates, etc, so make sure you come along.

Not been in a show before?  That doesn’t matter – we’re a very friendly bunch and you’ll get the chance to shine, whether you’re a singer, a dancer, or an actor (or good at all three!).

So don’t be shy – we’ll see you on Monday night!

Rehearsal and audition dates for The King and I

Members will be receiving a letter in the next couple of weeks, outlining all the important dates for The King and I.  In the meantime, here is a brief summary of the dates for your diary.

First get together:  Monday 10 September, 7.30 pm at Grand Central.  All of the audition pieces will be available to take away, and we will have a sing through of some of the show songs.

Principal auditions:  Monday 1 October (if you can’t make that date, you will have to audition earlier).

Show week is from Sunday 10 March, so you need to be free all of that week.  Performances are on 14, 15 and 16 March at the Embassy Theatre.

There will be an all day rehearsal on Sunday 3 March, at the Embassy.

Our production team this year is Andrea Hall as producer, Peter Wellsted as Musical Director, with Choreography by Lisa Jay.  Jo Fitzwilliams will be acting as Dance Captain at rehearsals.

President:  Mr John Turner, Chairman: Miss Jo Fitzwilliams, Vice Chairman: Mr Marino Jackson, Treasurer: Mr Richard Hall, Secretary: Mrs Sandra Colman.

Mrs Sandy Loosley was elected to the committee, but there are still vacancies, and we will be co-opting more members during the year.  We need a full complement on the committee, to ensure that the workload is evenly distributed!

Thank you to everyone who attended the AGM, and in particular our thanks to all those people who volunteered for office – without you, we would not have a society.

Hope to see you there.

£1000 donation made to MacMillan Cancer Support

We are delighted to announce that the profit made from One Night Only at the Embassy Theatre was a massive £1000!  The cheque has been handed over to Shirley Atherton, who is the Chairman of Skegness MacMillan Cancer Support.

Four in ten people in the UK will suffer from cancer in some form during their lives, and therefore it is vital for Macmillan to raise funhds to help as many people as possible, not only with the famous Macmillan nurses, but with doctors, help groups, help lines, information lines, and palliative care in conjunction with other local hospice organisations.

Thank you to everyone who supported our show; we look forward to seeing you all next time!

Our photograph shows Lisa Jay (Choreographer), Peter Wellsted (Musical Director), Shirley Atherton, and Andrea Hall (Producer and Chairman, SMTC).

Songs have been learned, routines practised, costumes prepared – we just need an audience now!

Please tell everyone you know what a fabulous show this is going to be.  All of the profits are going to a great cause, MacMillan Cancer Care, so we need to fill the theatre.

Extraordinary General Meeting

An EGM of the society is to be held at Seathorne School on Monday 21 November 2011, starting at 9l30 pm (following rehearsal).  The purpose of the meeting is to discuss members’ subscriptions for this year.  It is proposed to reduce the subscription to £20 for this year only.

It is important that you attend this meeting; we need at least 50% of the membership present in order to vote on the resolution.

Latest news from SMTC

Firstly, I am pleased to announce that Paul Johnson has taken up the position of Vice Chairman.   Paul is an enthusiastic committee member, and we are certain that he will work hard on behalf of the society.  We are also delighted to welcome Sandy Chapman to the committee; Sandy has attended her first meeting, and is already contributing and working hard.  We still have one vacancy, so please speak to any committee member if you are interested.

The committee has decided that all profits from our 2012 show will go to MacMillan Cancer Support.    To help promote our show we will also perform at the MacMillan Strictly Come Dancing night at the Southview Hotel on Saturday 12 November.  We will sing excerpts from our show, between 7.00 and 7.30 pm, while guests are arriving for their welcome drink.  Please make sure you attend rehearsals between now and then, and make yourself available for Saturday 12 November, so we can put on a good preview performance.

If anyone would like tickets for the Strictly Come Dancing Night, there are still some available.  The tickets cost £30 and include a three course carvery, entertainment by Sid Dennis, plus two local singers, the Macmillan Top Toe Tappers, and disco.  The highlight of the night will be five local amateur couples competing for the Strictly trophy!  Speak to Sandra for more information.

Look forward to seeing you all on Monday evenings, 7.15 at Seathorne School.  Watch this space for rehearsal schedules – Lisa will be joining us soon so there will be some dance rehearsals in October.

Rehearsals have started!

Rehearsals have now started for our next production, to be held on Friday 24 February 2012FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY!

We’re rehearsing some great music from across the whole spectrum of musical theatre - some is funny, some is really emotional – but it’s all starting to sound fantastic.

Last night we welcomed another four new faces to our group, but we would still love to see some more of the old faces back.  So come along next Monday to Seathorne School at 7.15 pm and see what next year’s show is all about.

‘ONE NIGHT ONLY’

Hello all you members – past, present, and future!

We hope you’re coming along to our first rehearsal, on Monday 12 September, 7.30 pm at Seathorne School, Winthorpe.  Don’t forget that as it’s National Cupcake Week we are bringing along cupcakes to have with our tea.  We’ll also be hearing all about next year’s exciting show, and loosening up those vocal chords again with some chorus numbers.

If you haven’t sung as part of a chorus before, this is your chance to learn how to sing in different voice parts in harmony, whilst making some new friends and having fun!

The date of next year’s show has been moved to Friday 24 February at the Embassy Theatre.  That means we have slightly less time than usual to rehearse, but we won’t be compromising on standards – we’ll just be working harder!

See you all next week.

2012 SHOW – BIG NEWS!

We have exciting news about next year’s show, so put Monday 12 September in your diary – that’s our first meeting after the summer holiday.

As usual, our first ‘rehearsal’ will be a social occasion so we can all catch up, and as it’s also National Cupcake Week, we’d like you to make some cupcakes if you can and bring them along!  We can then discuss plans for our 2012 show and you can all give us your thoughts and ideas.

And now the big news ………..

If you were at the AGM you will know that Doug had to resign as producer of Camelot.  This left us in a difficult position, with no-one to take up the challenge.  So, by way of a change, we have decided that next year we will perform a song and dance extravaganza – for one night only – at the Embassy Theatre.  It will be a fully staged event, with a set and costumes and special effects, and we hope to include extracts from a whole range of shows including some current ones which we cannot perform in full.   For example we are looking at Joseph, Grease, South Pacific, Cats, Miss Saigon, Les Miserables, Mamma Mia, The Sound of Music, Oliver, Chicago, Billy Elliott .. the list is endless, and we would welcome any input if you have any suggestions.  The show will not just be a series of musical numbers, so if you’re a closet uni-cyclist or juggler this could be your chance!

We hope that as many of you as possible will audition for parts in this show, as there will be many different styles of singing and many different formats – you won’t have to stand and sing a solo.  There will be duets, ensemble numbers and full chorus numbers in four part harmony – in other words there is something for everyone, be it singing or dancing or comedy drama.  Let us see what you can do!

We intend to donate all profits from the show to a Charity which will be decided by the committee; we feel that it would be a good idea to give something back to the community this year, having had a profitable show last year.

Here are the important dates for your diary:

  • First rehearsal Monday 12 September, 7.30pm, at Seathorne School
  • All day rehearsal Sunday 4 March, at the Embassy Theatre
  • Show date:  Friday 23 March at the Embassy Theatre (to be confirmed)
  • Technical and dress rehearsals:  Wednesday 21st, Thursday 22 March at the Embassy.

Cirque de Classes

If you enjoyed the choreography in My Fair Lady, then go along to the Embassy Theatre in Skegness this Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  Our choreographer, Lisa Jay, has produced and choreographed her own spectacular show featuring 360 pairs of dancing feet!   All of the performers are pupils of the Lisa Jay Stage Institute, and range in age from just 18 months to over 75 years.  To book tickets, click on the link, or visit the Embassy Theatre, Skegness.

CAMELOT NEEDS YOU!!

We are currently looking for an enthusiastic producer for our 2012 production of CAMELOT.  This is a fabulous show, with music and lyrics by Lerner and Loewe, and we’re really looking forward to performing it at the Embassy Theatre in Skegness next March.  Rehearsals will start in September, with auditions for main roles taking place early in October.  Once again, our Musical Director is Peter Coughtrey-Wellsted, and Richard Hall will be stage manager, so you’d be part of an experienced team who could help you all the way.

If you would be interested in producing/directing our show please get in touch with us – we’d love to hear from you.
